Matangi : Wise Goddess of Creative Expression

Reservations at Tandava Yoga Studio

Matangi proudly strums her veena while uttering divine words of wisdom and truth. She rules over artistic endeavours and powerful communication. While the path she paves is not an easy one, Matangi offers powerful boons, such as self-expression and courage. She is creative talent and intelligence. Associated to words and music, she governs our throat chakra.

This may seem idyllic, but far from it. As artists and activists know, speaking truthfully and living with integrity usually means living in the margins of society. As an outcast, Matangi is no stranger to scandal and humiliation, for she is the one who points to the elephant in the room and speaks up while no one else does. This is why she also gifts us with powerful courage and discernment, as well as voice and eloquence.

Do I bring my ideas to life? Do I give voice to my truth? If so, what supports me? If not, what do I fear?

In this 9th workshop of a series of ten on the MahaVidyas, the Great Wisdom Goddesses, we meet Matangi and learn to trust and express our true experience. We will explore chanting, somatic experiencing, pranayama, and meditation. In this 3-hour workshop expect discussion and stories. Bring pen and journal, wear layers. All levels welcome.

The Wisdom Goddesses, known as the MahaVidyas, each hold the key to a particular approach to freedom and Self-realization. Kali, the first of the MahaVidyas, is the fierce and unyielding power that helps us destroy what is holding us back. Tara, the second, carries us compassionately from the old to the new in the incessant renewal of life and learning. Lalita Tripura Sundari, the third, is the power of attraction and polarity that reveals beauty and gives meaning to our life. Bhuvaneshvari, the fourth, holds all of existence. Bhairavi, the fifth, urges us to see the war within for what it really is and to embrace the discomfort of change. Bagala commands respect for silence and truth, and graces us with the ability to focus our energy for maximum impact. Chinnamasta invites us to experience life through the wisdom of the body and to surrender our attachment to our thinking mind. Dhumavati helps us connect to our innate grandmother wisdom, across all ages and stages of life. Matangi, goddess of truthful creative expression, wants us to use our voice and intellect wisely, and to perceive the truth behind words.

This series of ten workshops is designed as an exploration into the representations, stories, and practices related to the Great Goddesses. You can take part in any of the workshops. Note that registration to 4 Wisdom Goddess workshops will give you a 5th for free. If this is your fifth, call the front desk to register at 778-484-2255.
